Specsavers was founded by Doug and Mary Perkins.There was a time when spectacles had to be provided by a Dispensing Optician. It could be argued that the Perkins were instrumental in the deregulation of optics which allowed them to open stores where unqualified staff could dispense glasses. This reduced costs and allowed them to provide specs more cheaply.
Douglas and Mary Perkins enjoy a place on the Sunday Times rich list and live in Guernsey. We suspect this means they pay less tax than if they lived on the mainland from which they have earned the majority of their wealth.
